The story of the World Boxing Union is like that of many upstart organizations. It began with a great idea and gained respect and recognition quickly. Mismanagement, greed and graft became the basic tenets of their business philosophy, and they eventually lost what it took them so many years to build. In their 15-year existence, they were actually able to feature some popular champions.

George Foreman was the heavyweight champion during the years 1995-1997. He was awarded the championship after his International Boxing Federation title was stripped in 1995. Foreman refused to participate in a rematch against Axel Schulz, and the IBF took his title away. Foreman lost his final bout in 1997 to Shannon Briggs.

Matt Skelton was the longest-reigning champion in the WBU. He held the title from 2004-2009, but the title had little value at that point. Most of the WBU vacancies were being set up for friends of the management to win. Skelton was forced to take fights in locations that were considered unsafe and against opponents who had questionable boxing background. Skelton was able to win these fights and became a cult hero to the few people who were still fans of the World Boxing Union.

The World Boxing Union, WBU, has a list of rules for each of the classes and titles. Some of these are known by most boxing fans. For example, each round is scheduled to three minutes followed by one minute of intermission before the next round. There are some others that are not so well known such as the fact that score cards are collected following each round and submitted to the WBU Supervisor to tally.

The rules and regulations are broken into a number of categories. The first category is general in nature. Another category gives specific rules for the weigh in. There are also medical requirements which includes the requirement that both contestants must have a physical examination, prior to their fight with the results submitted for review. There is also a category for any knockdown or knockout. One of the lesser known rules falls under the illegal actions. This section basically deals with low blows from one boxer to the other causing major suffering. Boxers must also know the section on fight injuries. This includes fair blows, self-sustained, accidental fouls, and intentional fouls.

There is another category covering the rules and regulations for the referee. There are also rules for the ringside physician as well as the timekeeper. One of the crucial category covers the topic of drugs and stimulants. Other considerations include the boxing gloves, bandages, protection equipment, and finally there is a miscellaneous category. If you like what you see, keep going: Utah boxer claims world title

There are a lot of rules and regulations involved in boxing. If a boxer is not familiar with the rules, then he can be penalized as most recently seen in the headbutt received by Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz title bout. In the regulations for the World Boxing Union, there are a total of fourteen sections and each section has several subsections.

The most important regulations pertain to: Weigh-in, Intentional fouls, and Drugs/Stimulants. A boxer’s weight is crucial to the performance of the fight. Knowing how to control weight prior to weigh-in can also effect mental alertness and energy. Weigh-In times are between 4pm-8pm local time the day prior to the fight and scales are available to the fighter two hours before weigh in time. The fighter then has two hours to make the prescribed weight and re-weigh.

The Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield ear biting incident is probably the most recognized intentional foul known to boxing fans. Intentional fouls occur in every sport, however boxing is probably more amplified since fans are fixated on only the two main participants in the ring.

Lastly, the use of drugs are prohibited in every sport, but boxing is probably the sport where it can have the most significant impact. A urine sample is collected either 12 hours before the fight and up to 24 hours after the match.

Most boxers who violate rules and regulations in boxing receive a penalty when discovered. The three discussed above may lead to disqualification of the fighter and can also bring a black eye to the reputation of the participant.

The World Boxing Union sets down the rules for every fight that occurs between boxers. Many of these boxing matches do not go on the air. Many of the matches are simply fought in local areas. The promoters gain money from the ticket sales, but the matches do not go on television. Only the matches between the heavy weight contenders make it onto Pay Per View or other forms of television.

If you need to learn about the World Boxing Union rules, one of the best places to go is directly to the source. The website contains all the rules that a fan needs to know about the sport. The sport may seem to be brutal to people who are not fans, but it is also called the gentle art of fisticuffs for a reason. The rules keep the sport from degenerating into a bar fight.

Boxers must go through a lot of training. They need to know the rules under which they must compete. The people who watch the event can learn why certain things happen during boxing matches. They can also learn why the referee makes certain calls. The rules are available to anyone with an Internet connection.

I have been boxing for quite some time now and I have always wondered what it would really take to one day actually fight professionally. Though I am not a beginner, I am still having a tough time with the boxing rules. I have heard that depending on what state you are boxing in, the rules may vary. Whether it be about the equipment or the actual rules themselves, they just will not be the same. So a fighter will have to get used to listening to the referees and to know exactly what it is the referee wants. In my last fight, I was having a hard time with the referee simply because I had no idea what he was saying. The fighter that I was going up against was obviously head butting me and also throwing low punches, yet I was not getting the call. I am pretty sure that it is an international rule that head butting and low blows are illegal but for some reason this referee was not saying anything. Though there are plenty of rules and most referees implement them, it will ultimately be up to the referee and how he views the fight. The hits keep comin’: Dana White Blasts Referee of Mayweather-Ortiz Fight

You’ve got your direct tv Deals and a nice, comfy couchwhich fights are you looking forward to this season? Boxing matches are all over TV but we’ve narrowed it down to three particular matches you should pay attention to.
Punching at the Paradise – It’s at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx, NY and it’s coming up soon and some of the biggest names in the biz will be there. It’s going to be a classic night with some knock outs, to be sure, and you won’t want to miss it.
Hopkins vs. Dawson – Held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, this battle will be one for the ages. These two middleweights both have a flashy style and there’s been a lot of trash talking already. Tune in come October to see the outcome of this great match.
Chavez vs. Manfredo – It’s going to be in Houston in November so you can bet there’s going to be a ton of local fans out for this one. Chavez is favored but don’t count him a winner yet – he’s got some stiff competition in Manfredo.

Many people are unaware of the historical information about the World Boxing Union and its champions, because it isn’t as commercially publicized as some other organizations. Below are a few of the better known champions in the history of the World Boxing Union.

-Hasim Rahman became heavyweight champion in May of 2000. Rahman would go on to fight Lennox Lewis for three other titles.

-”Irish” Mickey Ward won the light heavyweight title in both 1996 and 2000. Ward has held titles from three different sanctioning bodies. His life story has been made into the 2010 film “The Fighter”.

- James Toney has held both the cruiserweight and light heavyweight titles. He defended the light heavyweight title three times. Toney’s professional record includes 73 wins and only 6 losses.

-George Foreman won the heavyweight title in April of 1995. Foreman is probably the best known champion in the history of the World Boxing Union. Foreman has held multiple titles and fought against many boxing legends. His opponents include “Smokin” Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Michael Moorer, Evander Holyfield, and “The Greatest of All Time” Muhammad Ali.

The World Boxing Union (WBU) is a boxing regulating body known particularly among fighters in Europe. Most of its title fights are promoted by Sports Network run by British boxing promoter Frank Warren. WBU has produced popular names in the boxing world such as George Foreman and Ricky Hatton.

The rules for boxing bouts are more or less the same for all regulating bodies in the world such as the World Boxing Union (WBU). These are some of the rules that WBU adhere to:

1.The championship bouts are fought for 12 rounds. Each round lasts for three minutes.
2. If the boxer gets knocked down or knocked out, he will be counted up to 10. If the boxer does not get up before the 10th count then the fight is over. The opponent wins the match. If the boxer falls few seconds before the bell rings, the referee continues counting. If the boxer gets up, the bell rings. This means the boxers will fight in the next round.
3.Accidental injuries before the fourth round that occur due to low blows or head butts and cause the stoppage of fight will not receive a ruling. If the injury happens after round four, the scorecards will be used to determine the winner of the bout by technical decision.

Often, when you watch a championship fight, you don’t realize where the fighter has come from or where they will go after the fight. These are brief bios of some of the WBU’s best known champions.

With only 5 losses and 76 wins (68 by knockout), George Foreman is one of the most successful fighters ever to wear the World Boxing Union championship belt. Foreman has won heavyweight titles under 4 different sanctioning bodies. He was also an Olympic champion for the United States. His storied career includes opponents such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Evander Holyfield. Toward the end of his career, Foreman claimed the vacant heavyweight title in the WBU.

England’s Ricky Hatton has lost only 2 of his 47 fights. Hatton was undefeated when he took the light welterweight title in 2001. Since he claimed the title, Hatton has lost 2 fights against Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., under another sanctioning body. With those being the only 2 losses of his career, Hatton has successfully defended his World Boxing Union light welterweight title on 15 occasions. If you like what you see, keep going: Ricky Hatton ready to call time on boxing career

Boxing may be the sport with the most sanctioning bodies. With so many organizations, it can be confusing when different organizations have slightly different rules. Here’s a quick rundown of the World Boxing Union’s rules and regulations.

Time and scoring

A WBU fight is three rounds long, with three minute rounds and one minute intermissions between rounds. Three judges score the fight on a ten point must system. This is the standard system which awards ten points to the winner of the round and 9 or fewer to the loser of the round, depending on how many times he was knocked down or if he had any penalties.

Knockdowns

If a fighter touches the canvas with anything besides their foot or is completely supported by the ropes after a punch. A knockdown always requires an eight count and three knockdowns in one round will always be considered a technical knockout. If a fighter is down at the end of the round, the count will continue and the fighter cannot be saved by the bell.

Disqualifications

If a fighter commits a foul, he may be penalized points or disqualified, depending on referee’s decision. Championship fights cannot end with a disqualification from a low blow.
